Is pay secrecy still a thing in the 21st Century - and how could it affect your business

So thoughts........there are positives for workers understanding each others salaries:

It can help to close wage gaps that exist between genders and minorities at the hiring step

It will make you more equipped when negotiating pay rises

Companies can often foster cultures that discourage the sharing of salary information and at 20% of companies, according to the IWPR report (study in America), there are actual gag orders

So why do some companies embrace the pay secrecy:

✴ Companies are motivated to promote pay secrecy, either covertly or overtly, because it often saves them money.

It can mean that new hires don't know what kind of a salary is reasonable for their role – and some may end up receiving lower pay as a result.

✴ Potentially, it can also affect workers already on the career ladder; if people aren't aware they're underpaid in comparison to their colleagues, they're less likely to ask for – or have the leverage to secure – large pay rises.

Thankfully in the UK, Norway and Australia for example, firms are mandated to publish salary ranges or ratios; in the UK it is companies with 250 or more employees.

For the UK:

✅ In 2020, the gap among full-time employees fell to 7.4%, from 9.0% in 2019.

✅ Among all employees it fell to 15.5%, from 17.4% in 2019.

BIG NEWS ! Australia are really leading the way and setting a good example when it comes to tackling Online Trolls and Cyber Bullying.

The Australian Parliament has just passed the Online Safety Bill

This new legislation will ensure the laws that exist in real life will now exist online.

It will help hold perpetrators to account - remove their anonymity and create genuine real life deterrents. It will force big social media companies to act.

It is said that the legislation will NOT infringe on free speech in any way, shape or form - the threshold for abuse/threats/harmful content is aligned to the criminal code.

This Mother did.............

Maggie Mundwiller, who goes by the username @314handcrafted on the social networking service, said that she was interviewing for new roles after losing her job amid the coronavirus crisis.

When the Missouri-based mum was invited back for a second job interview by an employer, she said she was concerned that she wouldn't have childcare for her one-year-old.

However, upon informing the interviewers of her problem, she was told that the organisation was "child-friendly" and that she was welcome to bring in her toddler with her.

The TikTok video – which saw Mundwiller also describe how she prepared her son for the interview – has now been viewed millions of times.

It also garnered a wealth of comments from many, with one writing: "It makes me sooo happy to know there are companies like this (sic)".

Another person said: "Dear corporate America – make this normal".

The mother and job interviewee recently spoke to Good Morning America explaining that she was "so excited and inspired" by the organisation's attitude to her childcare challenge.

She added: "How cool is that - that a company would be so welcoming? It's awesome to know that there are companies out there that are willing to work with parents and understand the struggles that parents are going through and just accommodate."

When it comes to whether the candidate got the job, she revealed in a follow-up video that she was offered the position.
